Makin’ Moves Showcase feat. hip-hop artist Major

Major hit

By Tiffany L. Riley

Hip Hop artist Major has been making a lot of noise in St. Louis.  He has a popular single out right now called Money Dance. The song has gained a lot of popularity in local clubs.  One thing about this hard working artist is he will definitely be around for many years to come.   Watch him work and make moves!!  Mr. Money Dance himself, Major:

MAJOR:  Hey Ms. Tiffany, how you doin?

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  I’m doin’ great!  How have you been?

MAJOR:  I’ve been good, just working on my music.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  That’s good!  Okay lets get down to it.  How did you get started as a rapper?  And how long have you been doing it?

MAJOR:  Since I was young, about 9 years old.  My uncle had a studio and I used to go down there and listen to him create music.  Music runs real deep in our family and I just figured I would see what I could do with rapping.  Also seeing rappers on TV and on YouTube just made me say, “Yeah…that’s the life I wanna live.”

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  You currently have the hit single Money Dance.  Tell me how the song came about and who were some of the people who worked on the song.

MAJOR:  Been seeing a lot of different dances in the clubs.  I wanted a song about people who are out here grindin’ and getting money.  T-Rex did the beat for the song and of course I wrote the song.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  How many albums/mixtapes do you have?  Any upcoming projects?

MAJOR:  I’m still working on my first album, and it’s still untitled, but I’ve been doing promotions, shows, and staying in the studio.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  Who are some of the local artists you have worked with?  And who would you like to do a collaboration with?

MAJOR:  I have worked with Lil’ St. Louis, Pretty Tony, Jay-E.  I would like to do a song with August Alsina.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  What venues have you performed at?  Any upcoming gigs?

MAJOR:  I have performed at The Ambassador, The Coliseum, Soundbar.  I will be at Pure Ultra Lounge on Friday May 30.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  Where can the people listen to your music?

MAJOR: and on YouTube under the I Am Major Music channel.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  Any shoutouts you wanna give out?

MAJOR:  Liquid Assets, SMP, and all the people in St. Louis.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  Well there it is.  Major it was cool talking to you and I’ll have to come out and see you perform.

MAJOR:  Yeah that will be good!  Thanks for interviewing me.

TIFFANY LASHONDA RILEY:  You’re welcome.  You take care.

MAJOR:  You too.

Welcome back, ya’ll.  I hope since our last encounter, you’ve been cramming lots of Prince EA down those ear canals…but I’m also hoping that you’ve left some room….’cause I come bearing more of that gooood good.

Who Dat, Harpo?  Sam Smith

Hailin’ From:  England, United Kingdom

Spunky Calls It (Genre):  Blue Eyed Gritty R&B w/A Side of Pop

What’s to Like?:  I don’t know if it’s just me and my somewhat addictive personality, but every now and again, I come across a song that I can’t help but listen to over and over and over again. I’m talking, HOURS of ‘on-repeat’ action, people.  Sam Smith’s Nirvana is one of those songs.  First, there’s his arresting voice that constitutes the perfect trifecta of smooth, strong and intoxicating …kind of like a top-shelf single malt Scotch Whisky.  Goes down nice and easy and leaves you with that warm tingling sensation.  And those high notes? Oh, yes sir, yes ma’am.  But if that weren’t enough, there’s the content.  The lyrics paint pictures on the heart’s canvas that we can all relate to.

It’s too late to run away from it all
It’s too late to get away from it all
I’m done with running so I give in to you

This moment has caused a reaction
Resulting in our reattachment

Oh you take me to nirvana
I don’t think this will last
But you’re here in my arms

Reconnecting with that ex that you knew you should have left alone because it obviously, would never actually work out, but decide to go with it anyway because…it just feels right in that moment?  Well, that moment is Nirvana.

Check it.

If you’re interested, Sam has a new album dropping in the U.K. and U.S. on May 26, 2014 and June 17, 2014, respectively.  I’ve already given it a listen, and trust me, you should definitely be interested.

The 2014 Grammy Awards were a spectacular event!  There were some best dressed celebrities and over the top musical performances, but there was a major shock in one particular category that most likely left eyebrows raised all night long……

 macklemore and ryan lewis

WHAT!!!!!!……ARE YOU SERIOUS???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were a lot of major hip hop artists nominated in the same category.  The other nominees were Drake for  “Nothing Was The Same”,  Jay Z for Magna Carter Holy Grail”, Kanye West for “Yeezus”, and Kendrick Lamar for  “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City”Kendrick Lamar was favored to win the Best Rap Album category.

So I’m sure you all are wondering……HOW DID THEY DO IT?!!!!!  HOW DID THEY PULL OFF……… THE GRAMMY HEIST?!!!!”

Well let me give you a brief history on this dynamic duo.…… Hip Hop artist Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis are from Seattle, Washington.  The two first met in 2006.  At the time, Ryan Lewis was working for Macklemore as a photographer.  Ryan would eventually become the producer of the duo.  Their debut album The Heist” was released on October 9, 2012 and came in at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ single “Thrift Shop” shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2013.  Now this right here was MAJOR because it was the first time since 1994 that a song became #1 on the Hot 100 without having a major record label backing them up…

The dynamic duo released their second single Can’t Hold Us.  It also reached number 1 on the Hot 100 chart.  They then became the first duo to have two back to back singles on the Hot 100 chart.  Looks like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been making some moves.  Now let me give some background on the Hip Hop artist that was favored to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album ………..

Kendrick 1

Kendrick Lamar is from Compton, California.  He got signed to Aftermath/Interscope records in 2012.  He released his debut album “Good Kid M.A.A.D City on October 22, 2012.  His first single, “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Kendrick released two more popular singles, “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” and “Poetic Justice”MTV named him the #1 Hottest MC in The Game and in November 2013, GQ magazine named him Rapper of The Year.

                                                                                                                                             Ryan Lewis, MacklemoreKendrick 2

Macklemore/Ryan Lewis and Kendrick Lamar both received seven Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album.  At the end of the night Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won a total of four Grammys, and Kendrick did not winany.   A lot of Kendrick Lamar’s fans were upset that he did not win any Grammys for his debut album.

Apparently Macklemore felt like he didn’t deserve the Best Rap Album Grammy.  He took to Instagram and sent Kendrick a text telling him that he was robbed of the award…

Kendrick Lamar responded back by saying Macklemore deserved to win and that he hustled and grinded real hard.  Kendrick also said that Macklemore’s strong work ethic, not race, was the reason he won Best Rap Album.    So, then…..WHAT WERE THE KEY ELEMENTS TO MACKLEMORE WINNING BEST RAP ALBUM?

Well Kendrick Lamar’s album did become certified platinum (selling over a 1,000,000 copies); however he did not have any #1 singles on the Hot 100 chart like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.  Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had more commercial success than Kendrick Lamar; to have two #1 singles on the pop charts and get lots of airplay on pop radio is a BIG DEAL!!

So I guess Macklemore would have the edge over Kendrick Lamar in this case.  BUT…there were other top selling artists, as I mentioned earlier, in the same category that had a lot of commercial success with their albums!!

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, I have to say you pulled off the ultimate
