Man gets $50,000 settlement after NYPD cops ruin his Christmas

stop-yahnick-martin

It’s going to be a merrier Christmas for a Brooklyn man who sued the NYPD for ruining his family’s holiday.

And a Grinch-like cop will be getting a lump of coal in his stocking.

The city Law Department is paying $50,000 to Yahnick Martin to settle his federal lawsuit, according to court papers filed last week.

Martin claimed in the suit that he was hauled off in handcuffs and that his Chrysler van, packed with Christmas gifts, was stolen after cold-hearted cops left the vehicle unattended and with the engine running on a Brooklyn street.

“My family, we have to deal with this the rest of our lives, and there’s no amount of money that can take back what we missed out on that Christmas holiday,” Martin told the Daily News.

“I lost two aunts that following year who never got a chance to meet my children because we weren’t there for Christmas . . . It’s a tradition to go to South Carolina, (and) that was the only time I’ve ever missed Christmas at home.”

Officer Roman Goris learned a painful lesson, too: He was forced to kick in $500 toward the settlement and docked eight vacation days by Police Commissioner Bill Bratton for improperly searching through Martin’s pockets during the initial stop-and-frisk in Bedford-Stuyvesant, The News has learned.

Martin’s suit reads like a Charles Dickens tale.

He was sitting in a rented van Dec. 23, 2011, while his wife dropped off a Christmas present to a friend.

Martin, a father of three, was smoking a cigar. That apparently aroused the suspicion of Goris and colleagues, who pulled up in a police van and claimed they smelled marijuana, according to the suit.

Goris patted down Martin, an action that was found, after the departmental trial, to be justified.

But after not feeling anything that might be a weapon, he still reached into the man’s pocket and removed his wallet and lighter, which a trial judge found was unjustified.

Martin mouthed off about the treatment and was handcuffed.

As police took Martin away, he implored them to secure the van, which was still running and contained his children’s car seats, clothing, his wife’s pocketbook, two cell phones and the Christmas gifts.

Predictably, someone drove off with the van.

It was recovered later — damaged and stripped of the valuables.

“That’s too bad. You should have thought of that before being a smartass,” a cop retorted, according to the court records.

Police gave Martin summonses for disorderly conduct, which were later dismissed.

Goris’ lawyer declined to comment.

Selfies May Be Linked To Mental Disorders

501ffaae9b1a0477f75898926fe0708c

You’ve seen it thousands of times on Facebook and other social media outlets, there is even a song on the radio about it! Selfies have become a huge trend in social media and psychiatrists and mental health workers are linking them to mental health conditions related to narcissism and a person’s obsession with their looks.

According to psychiatrist Dr David Veal: “Two out of three of all the patients who come to see me with Body Dysmorphic Disorder since the rise of camera phones have a compulsion to repeatedly take and post selfies on social media sites.

“Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to help a patient to recognize the reasons for his or her compulsive behavior and then to learn how to moderate it,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

I’ve personally seen this with some of my own friends. They might take several selfies over and over again until they find the right one. Picking out details about their eyebrows, skin, noses, smiles, teeth, hair and so forth, all in an attempt to find the perfect angle to make the perfect picture. Even looking at how most of us choose our profile pictures on Facebook and other social media sites is a huge process. Believe it or not, as harmless as these acts all seem, they build up over time to create and create great forms of self consciousness and false sense of confidence. Instead of being okay with who we are no matter what, we strive to find the right picture with all the perfect details. The more likes we get on social media sites the happier we feel. Is this sustainable? Basing our happiness on our profile picture or selfie picture performance?
How far can the selfie obsession go? A British male teenager went to the extent of trying to commit suicide after he was unable to take what he felt was the perfect selfie. Danny Bowman became so obsessed with capturing the perfect shot that he would spend roughly 10 hours per day taking up to 200 selfies trying to get the perfect shot. As things got more and more intense for Danny, he lost nearly 30 pounds, dropped out of school and did not leave the house for six months as he kept trying for the perfect picture. During his suicide attempt, Bowman was saved by his mother.

“I was constantly in search of taking the perfect selfie and when I realized I couldn’t, I wanted to die. I lost my friends, my education, my health and almost my life,” he told The Mirror.

While this is an extreme case, it isn’t too far off from what goes through many of the minds of young, and even older, people as they take pictures of themselves for social media. Seeing other peoples pictures, seeing the attention they may or may not get, we end up comparing ourselves and the fine details of our looks. Overtime, an obsession builds and our looks become increasingly more important to us. Something I feel we should be focusing less and less on versus more and more.

Selfies frequently trigger perceptions of self-indulgence or attention-seeking social dependence that raises the damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don’t spectra of either narcissism or very low self-esteem,” said Pamela Rutledge in Psychology Today.

Narcissism, being obsessed with receiving recognition and gratification from ones looks, vanity and in an egotistical manner, is becoming a big problem in our digital age. I personally feel a big part of this stems from judgement of self, judgement of others and pop culture. There is a huge lack of addressing these personal issues within the education system or other programs youth and other young people have access to. We focus so much on educating a person to become a trained member of society, but we do nothing for their own personal development as a person. This is a very important aspect of personal development that I feel should be at the forefront of our education system.

The addiction to selfies has also alarmed health professionals in Thailand. “To pay close attention to published photos, controlling who sees or who likes or comments them, hoping to reach the greatest number of likes is a symptom that ‘selfies’ are causing problems,” said Panpimol Wipulakorn, of the Thai Mental Health Department.

The doctor believed that behaviors could generate more mental issues in the future, especially those related to lack of confidence.

The next time you go to post an image of yourself online, or even when you go out for the day, observe yourself and find out how much of your thoughts are based on how you look, what you think others will think of you and how you might be using your looks to try and make you feel good for a short period of time. From there you can work on accepting every aspect of who you are as being perfect and as it needs to be without needing to look outside yourself for self-love. You are much more than your looks.

Producer Jermaine Dupri Loses His Atlanta Mansion To Foreclosure

JS1_0220

ATLANTA — He tried for years to keep his northwest Atlanta mansion. But Jermaine Dupri has lost his former home to foreclosure, according to Fulton County, Georgia, legal notices.

The producer, songwriter and performer owes $2.5 million on the 9,441-square-foot home but is unable to make the monthly payments, according to a mortgage foreclosure notice. The property is valued at nearly $3.7 million, Fulton tax records showed.
“The debt secured by said Deed to Secure Debt has been and is hereby declared due because of, among other possible events of default, non-payment of the monthly installments on said loan,” the legal notice states. “The debt remaining in default, this sale will be made for the purpose of paying the same and all expenses of this sale, including attorney’s fees (notice of intent to collect attorney’s fees having been given).”
The Atlanta native helped launch the careers of such artists as Kris Kross and Da Brat and previously dated Janet Jackson. On Tuesday night, Dupri joined Usher on stage at Atlanta’s Philips Arena. But in recent years, Dupri’s money woes have made headlines.
In May 2013, SunTrust Bank filed suit against Dupri and his So So Def Productions for about $1.9 million, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Later that year, Dupri filed a response, claiming the bank changed the terms of the loan, leaving him with “unachievable payment terms” and fighting state and federal tax liens.

Foreclosure proceedings were initiated in 2011 on the home, but a planned auction in May of that year was canceled at the last minute. Dupri’s home was advertised for foreclosure again in December 2012, according to records in the Fulton County Daily Report. But it never sold.
Earlier this year, a former road manager for Dupri filed suit against him seeking four years of overtime pay, the AJC reported.
Dupri lived in the six-bedroom home for about 10 years. The 19-room home has nine bathrooms, according to property records.
It was not known late Wednesday whether Dupri’s home had been auctioned.

The North Hollywood-based actor’s filmography spans nearly two decades, and includes a small part on ‘Two Broke Girls’ and a fight scene with Chuck Norris on ‘Walker, Texas Ranger,’ which he lost.

Swedish Police Raid Pirate Bay

Police in Sweden carried out a raid in Stockholm today, seizing servers, computers, and other equipment. At the same time The Pirate Bay and several other torrent-related sites disappeared offline. Although no official statement has been made, TF sources confirm action against TPB.

For many years The Pirate Bay has been sailing by the seat of its pants so any downtime is met with concern from its millions of users.

This morning, for the first time in months, The Pirate Bay disappeared offline. A number of concerned users emailed TF for information but at that point technical issues seemed the most likely culprit.

However, over in Sweden authorities have just confirmed that local police carried out a raid in Stockholm this morning as part of an operation to protect intellectual property.

“There has been a crackdown on a server room in Greater Stockholm. This is in connection with violations of copyright law,” read a statement from Paul Pintér, police national coordinator for IP enforcement.

Police are staying quiet on the exact location of the operation and the targets involved but the fact that the national police IP chief is involved at this early stage suggests something sizable.

In addition, expert file-sharing case prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad has commented on the raid, further adding weight to the incident.

“There were a number of police officers and digital forensics experts there. This took place during the morning and continued until this afternoon. Several servers and computers were seized, but I cannot say exactly how many,” Ingblad told SR.

Ingblad would not be drawn on any arrests during the operation but TorrentFreak has learned that police may have detained at least one man connected to the site.

While it seems certain that The Pirate Bay has been targeted today, it was not the only casualty. Several other torrent related sites including EZTV, Zoink, Torrage and the Istole tracker are also down.

Update: The Pirate BayÂ’s forum Suprbay.org is also offline. The same goes for Bayimg.com and Pastebay.net.

Breaking news story, more as we have it.

New Music: “Right Now” It’s Wood Ft Colin Drew on King Of Twelve Recordings

As a DJ I’m obviously always on the lookout for good music, and about two hours ago a gem landed in my lap.  By way of the new King Of Twelve Recordings based out of Saint Louis I received a track titled “Right Now”. This song is by a new rap artist named It’s Wood, and it features the fresh vocals of Colin Drew. The song is produced by one of my favorite producers, Ronnie Notch. This track displays the perfect marriage of hip hop and R&B to create a classic ballad.  Both of these artists are new on the scene and have definitely made a statement with this track.

Rev. Sharpton & Brown Family Address Media

brownpresser

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI)- “This process should be indicted. We could foresee what the outcome was going to be. And that’s exactly what occured last night.”

Reverend Al Sharpton along with Brown family attorneys Benjamin Crump and Anthony Gray, held a press conference Tuesday morning to address the grand jury’s decision. Members of the National Action Network and Michael Brown Sr. were also in attendance.

Michael Brown’s mother Leslie McSpadden did not attend the conference that took place at the Greater St. Mark Family Church located at 9950 Glen Owen Drive in Ferguson.

Sharpton and the attorneys argue that this process was “supposed to give clarity.” Sharpton says he has never seen a prosecutor hold a press conference to discredit the victim.

“A first year law student would’ve done a better job.”

The group has publicly objected to this process because “all across America young people are being killed by police officers.” They argue that their acts are not insane. “We know that our children deserve equal justice,” said Crump.

“For the sake of public trust, we pray that prosecutors will say we want people to believe in the system.”

The group argued that Michael Brown will not be remembered for ashes of buildings burned in Ferguson. “Let the record be clear, you have broken our hearts, but you have not broken our backs. We will continue to pursue justice,” said Sharpton.

Although the group was not surprised at the outcome it was their hope to be “in a different place.”

Brown’s parents released a statement after the grand jury decision was announced that read:

“We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions. While we understand that many others share our pain, we ask that you channel your frustration in ways that will make a positive change. We need to work together to fix the system that allowed this to happen.

Join with us in our campaign to ensure that every police officer working the streets in this country wears a body camera.

We respectfully ask that you please keep your protests peaceful. Answering violence with violence is not the appropriate reaction. Let’s not just make noise, let’s make a difference.”

-The Brown Family

Rev. Sharpton thinks that it was irresponsible and unnecessary to release the announcement at night. He told the crowd that those who acted in a destructive manner do not represent the spirit of Michael Brown. “If you’re on Michael Brown’s side, you walk with dignity. Don’t lower your standards.”

Sharpton explained that the job of the grand jury is to decide if there’s enough evidence to move forward. He along with the attorneys do not believe that the case was presented in a fair and balanced manner. “This is not about all of us liking each other. This is about all of us being bonded with a common goal,” said Sharpton.

The group believes that Michael Brown’s death has lit a new energy for police accountability.

Attorney Crump ended the press conference by letting everyone in attendance know, “We condemn the violent acts from last night but we also condemn the violent acts from August 9th that killed Michael Brown Jr.”
