Family–Behind The Walls By Sylvia TruGem Warren Woods

FAMILY

BEHIND THE WALLS

 By Sylvia TruGem Warren Woods

Back in the day, my parents would round us kids up with the cooler, the blankets and the mosquito repellant and drive down what seemed like a long highway, all to get that funny feeling in our stomachs on site of that eggshell colored roller coaster peeking from behind tall lush green trees.  The Screaming Eagle, the roller coaster I never rode as a kid because I was too scary, stood like a monument across the highway.  My parents didn’t have a lot of money and Six Flags was expensive, just like today, but we didn’t know that and their pockets hardly felt it because they planned ahead.  We’d ride a few rides then come out to the van, slide the doors back, lay the blankets out, position the cooler in the middle of us all and dig in.  My father could make a sub sandwich like nobody’s business! This was their answer to fun without the costs.  Family time is important and does not require a huge bank account.  Today, we are all exposed to an overload of social media.  We’ll sit in the house and Candy Crush all day, kill a few mob bosses in Mob Wars or tweet our every stagnant move while the kids entertain themselves.  We know how to do that very well but let’s try something different.

Besides the fact that spending time brings families closer, did you know the amount of time a child spends with family doing constructive and engaging activities affects his or her spiritual and emotional health?  Pull the kids from in front of the television, off the X-box, off their tablets and out of the house!  Entertain them with events going on in St. Louis each and every weekend for FREE.  Don’t forget your cooler! Get creative by making bag lunches, packing fruit, animal crackers, Lunchables and water.  We can never be too busy to save money.  Remember, when kids are running around playing and having fun, as parents we almost have to remind them to eat so no need to go overboard!

Below is a list of some of the attractions in St. Louis you can enjoy with the kids for FREE:

St. Louis Zoo (get there early so you can get a FREE parking spot)

St. Louis Science Center

St. Louis Art Museum (probably not ideal for small children)

The Missouri History Museum (probably not ideal for small children)

City Garden
City Museum

Grant’s Farm

World Bird Sanctuary

Laumeier Sculpture Park

Google these places for specifics like hours of operations, rules and regulations but most importantly HAVE FUN!

Canal Street By Spunky Brewstar

Canal Street

So, welcome to my special little corner of the Society. This is where I’ll ‘Sound Off’ about what you should be jamming down your ear canals…’cause , well, you can’t put just anything in there(hint: step awaaaaay from the cotton swabs).

I’ll be covering anything from country, to hip hop, to R&B, to folk artists/albums….mainly, ‘cause that’s how I roll …and also, because my intent is to potentially broaden your horizons and turn you on and UP. It’s not about me, it’s about giving you multiple eargasms…#hashtagSELFLESS 😉

And the first cowboy, I’m gonna saddle up for this rodeo iiiiis:

Prince EA

Who Dat, Harpo? Prince EA

Hailin’ From: St. Louis, MO

What’s to like: This guy’s motto is, “I Make‘Smart’  Cool.” What’s NOT to love about that? Plus, lyrically, the kid is sick. I mean, he’s actually GOT. THINGS.TO. SAY.

I remember, years ago, happening onto one of his many Youtube videos for the first time and being blown away—and he’s only gotten better over the years. As with many of my favorite underground musicians, I wish I could hear his brand of music on the radio…but in order for that to happen, he’d most likely have to sign with a record label, and from what I’ve seen with other artists, they almost always lose themselves to the industry. He’s too good to lose. But you don’t have to take MY word for it …the man’s talent speaks for itself. Here are just a few of my favorites:

I KNOW WHO KILLED HIPHOP

Are These Our Legends? By Spunky Brewstar

 Legends

Are These Our Legends?

A week ago, I saw a living legend. For the second time.In less than a year.

I figure, there aren’t a lot of them left, I’ve got to soak it all in, while I can.

Lots of days I sit at home, content to spin BB King albums on my old RCA …but the only thing better than a vinyl, is the real thing. And so, I traveled to a not so distant city to see the “king of blues.”

The man is 88 years old and still touring. Think about that for a minute. I don’t know his financial situation, but I doubt at this point, he does it for any other reason than the love of his craft.—not the love of money, which so many of our artists today, seem to be driven by.

Watching him up on that stage, sitting, singing and playing with slightly less energy than I imagine he had in his younger days, but just as much passion –it got me thinking. WHO WILL OUR LEGENDS BE?

  • Baby let me put your panties to the side
    I’ma make you feel alright
‘Cause I’ma give you what you need, yeah
Mamí you remind me of something
I don’t know what it is
    You remind me of something
    You gotta show me

Kid Ink ft. Chris Brown, “Show Me”

  • I said that I’ma ride for my motherf*ckinghittas,
Most likely I’ma die with my finger on the trigger
I been grinding outside, all day with my hittas
And I ain’t going in, unless I’m with my hittas
    My hittas, my hittas
    My hittas, my hittas
    My hittas, my hittas
    My hittas, my hittas

YG, “My Hitta”

  • Don’t want a good girl
    Naw hoes is his choice
    D*ck on H
    Pu**y on W
    Mouth on open
    A**on smother you
A** on the cover too, Elle Magazine
    Vroom vroomvroom get gasoline
    Could I be your wife
    Naw we could bang though
    I got these n**gas whipped
    Call me Django

Chris Brown ft. Nicki Minaj, “Love More”

Those are lyrics from some of the current top-charting songs on Billboard’s Hip-Hop and R&B 2014 Charts.

So, again, I ask –Are these our legends?
